couple in apartmentAccidents can happen at any time, in an instant. A friend can slip on a spill in the kitchen and fall hard into the countertop. Or perhaps he trips over a dog toy and falls through the glass door to the balcony. You may think that your buddies and family would never sue you, but things can change when they’re faced with a stack of hospital bills and lost income from having to miss work while recovering.

This is the exact reason why renters insurance includes liability coverage. But how do you go through the motions of filing a claim if an incident does occur?

The first step is to stay as calm as you possibly can. With a cool head, you can collect the necessary documentation to make the process a smooth one. Documentation is key to getting the claim approved and receiving the payout as quickly as possible. Take note of the following:
  • Write a detailed description of what happened to cause the accident and the aftermath of the injury. If you need help recalling details, talk to others who were present at the time. The details help paint the picture, so don’t be scared of being too thorough.

  • Note the people who were involved and who were simply present as witnesses. Provide their contact information to your insurance provider in case they need to follow up with questions.

  • Explain the location of the accident. If a friend tripped on a lose stair when leaving your apartment complex, the liability may fall on the landlord. But if the accident occurred inside of your unit, it’s on you. Specific details can help settle ambiguity.

  • Take pictures as you deem necessary. This may involve pictures of the location, people in attendance and/or the injuries sustained.

  • Save receipts from emergency care, including cabs to the hospital and medical bills. While it’s important to get your loved ones the care they need right away without waiting to file a claim, these records can come in handy with getting reimbursed later.
