A disaster can strike at any moment. Having VA homeowner’s insurance is a good way to help prepare for unexpected costs, as is making a home inventory, which can help you quickly assess the damage. Here are some tips the Insurance Information Institute thinks may come in handy for homeowners who are interested in creating an inventory of their personal belongings.

•Taking it slow and working on one room at a time can help make this possibly daunting task seem more manageable.
•While creating your list, take time to evaluate your home insurance coverage to ensure your belongings are adequately covered.
•More expensive items like jewelry may require you to add a floater onto your homeowner’s policy.
•Keep the receipts of big purchases with the inventory so you can quickly find information such as the date of purchase, cost of certain items, and the serial numbers.
•Keep your inventory in a secure place, such as a safe deposit box at your local bank. When you choose to keep it at home, lock it in a fireproof, watertight container.
•Include all items in your inventory, not just expensive items like flat screen TVs. Your clothes, your children’s toys, and other mundane items will cost money to replace and therefore need to be covered.

Many residents may not be adequately covered by their VA homeowner’s insurance. With your inventory in hand, contact one of our experienced insurance agents to have your coverage evaluated.
