• Turning off your car when parked, especially if it has a large engine. A good rule of thumb: if you plan to idle for more than a minute, cut the engine.

• Driving leisurely. Many of the things that shorten your drive time also deplete fuel. Avoiding speeding, fast accelerations, and hard braking will help your car run more efficiently. • Using cruise control on the highway and staying at or under 60 mph. There’s one exception: don’t use cruise control in hilly areas, where it requires extra gas to maintain speed.
