One of nature’s most elegant wild animals may be the deer. These majestic creatures are found in the woodland areas of the Old Dominion State. Despite their grace and swiftness, deer are often hit by unsuspecting drivers as the deer cross over to the other side of the road. These animals are almost all muscle, so colliding with one can cause a lot of damage to your vehicle. You may be able to save yourself from deer collisions and higher Virginia auto insurance rates by following the advice below to avoid trouble at deer crossings:

  • Deer are generally most active during dusk and dawn. Do your best to either not drive during these times or be watchful for nearby wildlife.
  • Fall is mating season for deer and the males often fight for females. You may be able to steer clear of trouble by choosing routes away from wooded areas.
  • When you see a deer, slow down right away. These creatures often travel in groups so more may jump out unexpectedly.
  • Be on the lookout for the deer crossing signs posted by the Department of Transportation. These indicate that the area is heavily populated by deer.

Individuals who are unfortunate enough to hit a deer should contact the conservation police to report the incident immediately. You should also contact your Virginia auto insurance agent right away to get the claim rolling.
